HOW TO STRAIGHTEN MY TEETH?

Introduction: Orthodontic malocclusion is a very common problem of teeth. Teeth appear crooked, or proclined  or bent backwards, may be crowded, the entire jaw may be placed either too forward or too backward, we may not be able to chew properly because the molars are out of place and so on. This problem causes long term occlusal and aesthetic concerns. Problems may be simple or complex, but any orthodontic problem will lead to disturbance in the long run. If we neglect or ignore this, the situation will get from bad to worse. Hence it’s imperative to visit an orthodontist.

Cause: The reasons for orthodontic malocclusion are many, but the primary reason is insufficient jaw size to accommodate all the teeth. Sometimes it’s hereditary. Sometimes it’s genetic. Whatever the cause, we need to be vigilant in observing our dentition and visit an orthodontist if we feel we have improperly aligned teeth or jaws.

What do we do about these? Luckily, we have a solution! Orthodontist is the specialist who treats these kinds of malocclusions.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE?

There are several options.

1.Metal braces: These are the regular braces worn for the entire duration of treatment, while visiting the dentist every month. Very meticulous oral hygiene is required.

2.Ceramic braces: These are similar to metal braces, except that they are white in colour. So they are more aesthetic.

3. INVISIBLE ALIGNERS

Invisible aligners are very comfortable, convenient and flexible. We can remove them while chewing, or brushing unlike braces. No need to visit the dentist every month. Just one visit is sufficient.

4. SELF LIGATING BRACES

Self ligating braces are advanced forms of metal and ceramic braces which do not require multiple visits.

5. LINGUAL BRACES

Lingual braces are placed on the backside of teeth to prevent visibility. But they are complex.

6.HEADGEARS AND APPLIANCES

Head years and habit breaking appliances are given for complex problems like jaw irregularity and habits that cause the malocclusion. Thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, are some habits that cause malocclusion. So we need to break the habit first. Your orthodontist will help you in selecting the best suitable appliance based on evaluating your condition.

Orthodontic treatment helps ensure proper function of teeth and create healthy smiles. A good bite makes it easier for you to bite, chew and speak. Teeth that are misaligned are harder to clean and can cause abnormal wearing of tooth enamel which can lead to extensive and expensive dental procedures.

Orthodontic treatment is not a quick fix. It is a complex biological process. It involves changes in jaw bones, facial bones and soft tissue as teeth are moved into their new positions. Your care often starts with a thorough examination of the teeth and mouth, and study of dental records such as x-rays, photos and models of the teeth. From this, your orthodontist can develop a custom treatment plan.

Working together with your orthodontist, orthodontic treatment can yield life-enhancing results: better function (biting, chewing, speaking). Our advice: keep your scheduled appointments, advise your orthodontist of problems that may popup between appointments, watch what you eat and drink, avoid sugary drinks and brush and floss as instructed by your orthodontist. It’s worth the effort to reach the goal you and your orthodontist share – giving you a healthy smile that will last a lifetime.
