WHAT IS NITROUS OXIDE

Nitrous oxide— or “laughing gas” as we generally call it — its one of the lightest and the most safe types of sedation used at the dental clinics. In fact, it’s been used for more than a hundred years.

If you have never experienced nitrous oxide for dental procedures, it feels almost like having 2-3 glasses of wine. Although you’re conscious and aware of everything going on around you, you simply don’t tend to mind things after sedation. You might even experience some giggles at times too.

THINGS TO EXPECT WHILE SEDATION

Laughing gas is administered through a soft nose-piece, all you have to do is to  breathe In and breath Out during your dental appointment and the mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen creates a peaceful, calm and relaxing sensation throughout your body, which can also be described as a feeling called as “Euphoria”.

As sedation is inhaled, the gas quickly is absorbed into your respiratory system and then into your bloodstream. This particular delivery option makes laughing gas extremely safe and acts quickly.

Since you’re still fully aware of your surroundings, we’ll also utilize local anesthetic (numbing medication) when necessary. Although you’ll be less sensitive to stimulation, we still would want to ensure that you have a painless experience for routine treatments like fillings ,extraction or crowns. The anesthetic will completely numb the specific area and its effect wears off within a few hours. And chances are that with the nitrous oxide, you won’t be bothered much about the injection whatsoever.

WHEN IS LAUGHING GAS RECOMMENDED?

Nitrous oxide sedation is ideal for scenarios like:

Mild anxiety or phobia

Slightly longer/detailed or delayed tooth procedures

Tooth extractions

Non-cooperative patients

Crown preparation

Dental implants

Baby root canal therapy

However, we could easily administer nitrous oxide for more number of “routine” appointments, such as cleaning, if anxiety stands between you and the care you require.

Children also benefit from conscious sedation, as it helps them to rest , relaxed and be more still throughout their appointment.

Since laughing gas can be adjusted throughout your appointment, it’s easy for us to control your level of comfort. Even if you simply need the “edge” taken off, nitrous oxide is a good option to consider. Especially if you’re nervous about seeing the dentist.

NITROUS OXIDE EFFECT AFTER TREATMENT.

Since nitrous oxide is an conscious and inhalation sedation, the effects of which wears off quite quickly. As soon as our dentist turns off the nitrous and switches  to 100% oxygen, the sedative sensations begin to ease. In a matter of 5-10 minutes, you’re immediately back to your normal self.

It would also be very easy to drive back unlike in normal ways. Unlike deeper types of sedation dentistry, you wouldn’t need someone along with us to accompany you to your appointment.

Eases your anxiety!!
