Concerns with wisdom teeth are fairly common these days and the thought of not having them removed because they do not have any effect on the rest of the teeth and jaw is also common among people but the fact is wisdom teeth can cause problems to surrounding structures. Hence having them extracted sooner rather than later can prevent upcoming problems in the future.
FIVE THINGS THAT CAN HAPPEN IF THE PAINFUL WISDOM TOOTH IS NOT REMOVED:
SEVERE INFECTION AND PAIN:
When the wisdom tooth is impacted, they are trapped below your gum line which leads to food lodgement making it a breeding ground for bacteria leading to gum infection which can be very painful, sometimes which might not even be controlled by pain killers.Such bacterial infection can cause pericoronitis, acute abscess with symptoms intensifying to severe pain, swelling and fever in some cases.
EFFECT TO THE ADJACENT TOOTH:
The location of the wisdom tooth itself can make the teeth difficult to care for. This becomes greater potential for decay of the wisdom tooth as well as the healthy tooth adjacent to it. In case of horizontal and mesioangular impactions, the angle in which the wisdom tooth grows causes decay to the root of the adjacent tooth.
- CHEEK BITE:
When there is no adequate space for wisdom teeth to erupt into a proper position, it then erupts sideways towards the cheek causing trauma to the inner lining of cheek. This continuous trauma to the cheek may lead to crack in the lining of the mucosa. This chronic cheek biting can cause redness, painful sores leading to difficulty in eating and opening of mouth.
- CYST FORMATION:
A cyst may develop around the crown of the tooth when it is enclosed in the jaw and cannot fully emerge. This can cause damage to not only the tooth but also the bone. When the cyst grows larger than 2 centimetres in diameter, you may notice:
- Swelling
- Tooth sensitivity
- Tooth displacement
If you look inside your mouth, you may also notice a small bump. If the cyst causes tooth displacement, you might also see gaps slowly forming between your teeth.
- CROWDING:
If there is not enough space in your jaw for the wisdom teeth to erupt, they come at a different angle causing your teeth to shift. Over time, this can change your existing beautiful, straight smile into one where teeth are crooked or unevenly spaced. And if you are a person who has spent years correcting your misaligned teeth, then this wisdom tooth will create havoc and ruins years of hard work.
